My PIck - Balika Vadhu !

Balika Vadhu ! A story hinged on the issue of Child Marriage, a malady of our society..
The makers of the serial have contributed in their own way to disseminate awareness about this social problem .. A deviant from the typical saas bahu, numerous marriages and reincarnations, the serial has kept the audience hooked since its inception !
The story revolves arround an affluent family in Rajasthan who has married there 8 year old son Jagdish with an equally young girl called Anandi. Balika Vadhu narrates the story of this young girl, how she , in the middle of trying the flavours of childhood , is all of a sudden married and sent to her live with her in-laws ( her father in law, mother in law and the wicked Dadisaa ! among others). How she deals with this changed situation , how she tries to adjust in a changed setting with strangers and new relationships etc surely keeps me glued to the serial.
I am hooked to this serial due to the reality and facts depicted in it. The serial not only projects the problem of child marriage but other many consequences that arise with it . The girl at a young age is expected to be an all rounder , serving each and every member of her family well, managing the house well, taking care of each and everything from breakfast to customs to rituals to duties etc. She has now no time to enjoy her childhood , not even allowed to continue her studies and to craft a career or independency is a dream far off, she is only expected to do the Choolah Chaukhi and perform her duties ardently.
The makers of the serial have very creatively brought to light the fact that this social problem is not only prevailant is the rural areas among illiterate people but also very much a practice of the upscale families. It is the duty of us educated people to stop this practice and to make aware people around us of the ill effects of Child Marriage.
A small step towards it can be - to influence people working in our houses for us , to teach them and bring forth to them the consequences of this practice. Every bit counts !!
